Early Morning, October 29, 2012. Lido Beach, NY.

We evacuated. It's taken me almost a year to write about what we've been through.

Blog Description

I made my first entry in this blog on October 28, 2012, the day before the Northeast was decimated by Hurricane Sandy. At the time, my three older kids were in college, my youngest was beginning his senior year of high school, I was working as a part-time receptionist, and had just snagged a holiday job at Williams-Sonoma.

My second entry was 10 months later. I never did make it to Williams-Sonoma.

This is an experiment. The blog began as a way to hone my writing while attempting to connect to other women in parenting or career transitions that paralleled a diminished bank account resulting from undergraduate child support. But the hurricane shifted the ground under my feet, literally and metaphorically. I still desire connections. But I want to serve as life's witness as well, and offer help and consolation to other mothers who have been at the mercy of a natural disaster.

What follows is my original profile introduction. In retrospect, it sounds naive:

"I finally attained my B.A. degree at the age of 52 and set off to save the world. Recession woes and 3 kids in college means that now I just want to save my sanity. Realizing I've joined a crowd of baby-boomers whose children have left for college at the same time many have been downsized and seek meaningful employment, I invite you all to join me for mutual sustenance and indefinite escape from everyday worries."

Where will this blog take me? Let's see.
